What Is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced Ray-Kee) is a Japanese word which usually translates as universal life force or spiritual energy and is a form of natural healing rediscovered at the beginning of the last century by Dr Mikao Usui (1865-1926).
Reiki is a safe and non intrusive hands-on healing technique using natural energy that is all around us in every living thing. Recognised in the East for centuries through various different names, i.e. chi (China), ki (Japan), or prana (India), this life enhancing energy helps rebalance, revitalise, and accelerate the bodies own natural ability to heal itself.
However, it is not just the treatment of the physical body that reiki addresses. It also helps to harmonise all aspects of a person at a much deeper level…the mind, body and spirit, thus getting to the causative level of an issue rather than just the symptom.
Reiki can be used to great effect in a number of different ways. Whether suffering from stressful situations, emotional, or physical difficulties, it can be used to encourage a positive change in ones lifestyle bringing the mind, body and spirit back into balance. Some physical problems can be treated quite quickly, but longer term illnesses may take longer as there is no set time scales for healing. Even if there is no obvious problem, a reiki treatment can be a deeply relaxing, calming experience releasing deeply held blockages. You cannot overdose on reiki. As this form of energy is natural and comes from the source, there are no damaging side effects, and it is now being used by doctors and in hospitals alongside conventional medicine to help speed up the healing process.
A treatment consists of the recipient usually laying prone on a couch (or sitting on a chair) having nothing else to do but relax. There is no belief system attached to reiki just the willingness to be healed. The reiki practitioner positions the hands very gently on or over various parts of the body and holds them there for a few minutes at a time, allowing the reiki energy to pass from the giver to the recipient. The whole body is usually treated and this takes about one hour. During the treatment the recipient may feel certain sensations as the reiki flows to where it is needed. Feelings of heat, coolness or a tingling sensation are sometimes felt, but other times there may be nothing at all. Don’t worry, these are all natural reactions to the bodies own unique way of rebalancing and healing itself.
After a treatment, a very deep sense of relaxation is often experienced, and it is advisable to drink plenty of water during the next few days, due to the body detoxing, and to be aware of your bodies own needs, i.e. more rest, sleep or relaxation time.
